St. Christopher's Children’s Respite Service was opened at Oaklands Grove, Ballinalee Road, Longford in November 2009. It is a four bedroom home like facility which delivers a respite service to children between the age of 4 – 18, with varying degrees of Intellectually Disability, or autism. The unit is open on a part time basis (approximately 17 nights per month), delivering overnight and day respite to approximately twenty service users. Its staff skill mix consists of both
nursing and care staff, and this team works in close collaboration with families and carers, which is an integral part in the effectiveness of this valuable service.
The respite service continues to evolve as a needs base service and the contribution of Parents and families are recognised as a significant factor in its ongoing development. Staff liase closely with the school staff and other multi-disciplinary team members, to provided a person centred approach to care.

- Our aim is to provide a planned short-term break for parents and guardians who are fulltime carers of a child with an intellectual disability.
- We aim as far as possible to facilitate friends sharing respite breaks together, therefore supporting the development of friendships, promoting independence and social inclusion.
